We often find ourselves caught in a web of external demands and distractions in the hope to find contentment and joy. But what if the key to lasting peace, happiness, and love lies not outside, but within? This is the profound promise of Self-inquiry, a core practice in the nondual tradition of Advaita Vedanta.
Self-inquiry is an invitation to turn your attention inward, to abide in the stillness and silence of your true-Self. It's not about abandoning your daily life, but rather enriching it by understanding the Source of your Being. While sitting quietly with your eyes closed can be a powerful way to practice, Self-inquiry can also be integrated into any moment of your day when your mind isn't outwardly focused.
The essence of Self-inquiry lies primarily in two powerful questions, often referred to as the Brahmastrams – the divine weapons that dissolve the restless egoic-mind:
"Who am I?" This broad question serves as a constant reminder to redirect your attention back to your Self, especially when you feel disconnected or lost. It's a gentle yet potent way to prevent the ego from taking over and to start your day with a deeper sense of awareness.
"Who is this 'I' that(s)______(fill in the blank)?" This question is more specific, designed to address individual thoughts, emotions, or sensations as they arise. For example, if you find yourself feeling bored, you might ask, "Who is this 'I' that's bored?" This practice helps to specifically deconstruct one-by-one the ego's identities, leading you back to the underlying Reality of yourSelf.
The beauty of Self-inquiry is its effortlessness. It's not about forcing an answer, but about allowing the inquiry to guide your attention inward. As you consistently engage in this practice, you'll begin to notice a subtle sense of change, an inner-peace arising from within.
Every moment of turning your attention inward, whether in quiet contemplation or amidst daily activities, is a step closer to Self-realization – the direct experience of your True-Nature of Peace. Embrace this journey of self-discovery, and allow the profound wisdom of Self-inquiry to illuminate your path to lasting peace and joy.
